Shock Delay in Milngavie Primary Refurbishment
SNP run East Dunbartonshire Council has decided to put all major building and refurbishment work on hold for an indefinite period.
Among the projects caught up in this is the refurbishment of Milngavie Primary School.
THe council was dealt a financial blow when the SNP/Green Government cut the grant it gives to councils for capital works by over a fifth in real terms.
When the Liberal Democrats were in power on the council before the May 2022 elections, we had arranged for the refurbishment work to start during the summer of 2023. The plan was for the pupils to move to a temporary school on Oakburn Park.
When the SNP took power after the last council elections, they initally confirmed that timetable. Then they postponed the start of the work to November 2023, then to August 2024, and now indefinitely. Cllr Aileen Polson will press for the earliest feasible timescale, and for the council to stick with the refurbishment plans.
In the meantime planning permission has been granted for the temporary school, and if it goes ahead there will be several conditions imposed.
The council will provide a free bus service for all Primary pupils between the Primary catcvhment area and the tempary school at Oakburn Park.
There will be two new School Crossing Patrols, one on Oakburn Avenue and one on Clober Road.
The council will draw up a Travel Plan to encourage more sustainable means of travel other than the private car. This Travel Plan will need to be approved by the council's planning board.
