Susan Murray Newsletter - The Budget and Garden of Remembrance
A local update from your Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dunbartonshire, Susan Murray. On this week's update, the budget was announced by the Government and visiting the Garden of Remembrance in Westminster.
THE BUDGET - OUR LOCAL PRIORITIES
This week, the Chancellor outlined her Budget in Parliament. After years of economic mismanagement, communities across the UK, including Mid Dunbartonshire, need new hope.
I'm calling on her to pass capital funding to the Scottish Government via the Barnett Formula to allow the construction of our new health and care centre in Milngavie and Bearsden. Rachel Reeves rightly added £3.4 billion to Scotland's budget; part of it must go to our new centre for local patients and health professionals.
I'm also supporting calls for the Chancellor to listen to small business. The Scottish Chambers of Commerce have urged her to “create an environment for business investment to accelerate.”
We have many brilliant SMEs in Mid Dunbartonshire who have had it tough lately, and they need support from the Treasury to keep providing our community with great products, services, and jobs.
THE BUDGET - ED DAVEY ON TODAY
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey, was a guest on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
I join him in welcoming the additional money for health but also with him in his concerns over issues like care and small businesses.
Liberal Democrats will work with the new government where we can but we will also hold their feet to the fire where needed, in the interests of our communities that sent us to Westminster.
REMEMBRANCE GARDEN
It was an honour to visit the Garden of Remembrance in Westminster to pay my respects to those from our community who gave their lives to defend our country and to those who are currently or have served in our armed forces.
MEETING RADIOTHERAPY UK
During my meeting with Radiotherapy UK, they told me about the deeply concerning lack of access to radiotherapy in NHS Scotland.
We have too few machines and too long waiting lists. Liberal Democrats are demanding better health and care services for all.
OUR CHILDREN, OUR FUTURE
It was lovely to meet with my friend, Baroness Walmsley at the Our Children, Our Future event in the House of Lords.
The Baroness chairs the Lords' Food, Diet, and Obesity Committee which has published its report. You can read the report here.
LATEST DROP-IN SURGERY
It was great to hold another great drop-in surgery this past weekend.
Thanks to ASDA in Bishopbriggs for having me and everyone who came to chat with me. Stay tuned to my socials for details of more surgeries to come.
WINTER SUN LAMPS
Mental health is as important as physical health. As the long nights start to draw in, it's important to keep good mental health in mind.
That's why I'm happy to support our local libraries who will be the first in Scotland to offer Wintering Well Boxes, including sun lamps and other tools to help combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
You can find out more about the initiative here.
NEXT DROP-IN SURGERY
I will have more information about future surgeries on my social media and in future editions of this newsletter.
GRITTING AND ROADS
The weather is getting colder and measures are being taken in East Dunbartonshire to keep us all safe when the winter conditions arrive.
Crews from the local council are now on call 24/7 and you can get up-to-the-minute information on gritting at the link here. A form to report issues is also available there.
