A local update from your Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dunbartonshire, Susan Murray. On this week's update, the first drop-in surgery, maiden speech given in parliament and local visits across the constituency.

FIRST SURGERY

It was great to meet local people at my first surgery as the newly-elected MP at Morrison's in Bishopbriggs.

I enjoyed meeting with people to hear about the issues they care about and how they would like me to help them.

I'll be holding regular surgeries, please keep an eye on this newsletter and my social media channels for dates and times.

MAIDEN SPEECH

I was delighted to give my maiden speech in the House of Commons and talk about all the fantastic things people in Mid Dunbartonshire have done and are doing.

It also was good to highlight our heritage by mentioning Thomas Muir of Bishoppbrigs and his role in extending democracy.

In my speech, I said:

"One message that came across loud and clear on the doorsteps was that residents in Mid Dunbartonshire are tired of voting against things; they want to vote positively for things.

"Thomas Muir of Huntershill in Bishopbriggs was a famous son of Mid Dunbartonshire.

At the end of the 18th century, he was a strenuous advocate of equal representation of the people in the House of the people, where I stand today. He said:

“'I have devoted myself to the cause of the people. It is a good cause. It shall ultimately prevail. It shall finally triumph.'”

I am proud to have been elected by our community to represent us at Westminster and will always put Mid Dunbartonshire first.

MILNGAVIE AND BEARSDEN MEN'S SHED

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with the guys at Milngavie and Bearsden Men's Shed and hearing about what they're doing to combat loneliness, isolation, and poor mental health among men in our community.

East Dunbartonshire Association for Mental Health (EDAMH)

Mental health is very important to me, it should be treated with the same seriousness as physical health.

It was also a pleasure to meet with the great folks at the East Dunbartonshire Association for Mental Health (EDAMH).

They do a great job providing community-based support services throughout East Dunbartonshire.

TORRANCE TENNIS CLUB

The future is in good hands at Torrance Tennis Club. I met the committee who are working hard to upgrade the courts so children and families can enjoy playing tennis locally and all the benefits that brings.

Community sports clubs play an essential role in keeping people fit and connected and I’m proud to have such a great example in Mid Dunbartonshire.

I look forward to visiting again, I think my forehand needs a little bit more work.

VISITING BISHOPBRIGGS ACADEMY

It was great to visit S4-S6 pupils and staff at Bishopbriggs.

The modern studies and politics students I met were really engaged and asked some great questions. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them ended up on the green benches themselves one day.

OCTOBER 7TH ANNIVERSARY

This week marked the anniversary of the horrific attacks in Israel and the beginning of the current hostilities in Gaza.

I am proud to associate myself with the heartfelt words of our party leader, Ed Davey, on this sad occasion. You can read Ed's words here.
